Bourgoin
captain Julien Frier is in hot water after being called to an ERC
disciplinary hearing following his club’s ill-tempered European Challenge
Cup final.
Bourgoin
lost a feisty match 15-3 against Northampton Saints
at the Twickenham Stoop, and Frier has now been summoned to answer a charge
that he punched prop Euan Murray. He will go before the disciplinary
committee in Dublin on Thursday charged with ‘contravention of Law 10.4
(a)’.
Bourgoin sub Thomas Genevois has also
been called up after his red card in the same match for punching Courtney
Lawes.
The Top 14 club had called for Lawes
himself to be cited for a late tackle on Morgan Parra which resulted in the
international scrum-half having to
pull out of France’s summer tours to New Zealand and
Australia.
The independent disciplinary committee
will be chaired by Pat Barriscale.

Stade Francais signing Ollie
Phillips has been shortlisted for the IRB Sevens Player of the Year
award. The England captain, who recently signed for the Paris giants from
Newcastle Falcons, is one of six players up for the award.
“It would be a massive honour to be
named Sevens Player of the Year. It would cap off a great season,” said
Phillips.
Phillips inspired England to their
maiden success in Wellington in February and a home success at the London
Sevens last weekend.
Toulon centre Sonny Bill
Williams has played down his prospects of representing the All Blacks at
the 2011 World Cup, indicating that he may prolong his stay in France rather
than head back to New Zealand.
The former Bulldogs rugby league signed
a one-year extension with Toulon this season, and was widely believed to be
eyeing up a possible move back home in time to get selected for the 2011
squad.
But the 23-year-old appears to be
having second thoughts about that following a successful first season in
France.
“When I first went to rugby I wanted it
all, and I still do want it all because I am very driven, but I’ve realised
that the idea of going back to New Zealand and trying to play for the All
Blacks is not as much on the cards as I had first thought,” he told the
Herald.
“I’m enjoying my time in France. I just
want to learn the game to be considered a world-class rugby player,” he
added.

Elsewhere, Guinness Premiership side
Leeds Carnegie have confirmed the signing of Biarritz’s Samoan wing Henry
Fa’afili.
The 28-year-old returns to Britain,
where he previously played rugby league for Warrington Wolves, following two
years with the French side.
Another player on the move is Romanian Petru Balan, the former
Biarritz prop who joined Brive during the season as a ‘medical joker’. The
32-year-old has signed a two-year contract with relegated Dax.
Mont-de-Marsan, who were also
relegated, have also been in the transfer market, snapping up fly-half
Thibault Duvallet from Union Bordeaux-Begles and flanker Soane
Toevalu from Toulon.
The club was given a further boost with
captain Jerome Dhien extending for a year, while Frederic Urruty
has signed his first professional contract.
Fellow Prod2 outfit SU Agen have
signed centre Junior Pelesasa, 28, on a three-year deal from Western
Force, in Australia. The New Zealand born 28-year-old started his career in
rugby league with Brisbane Broncos, but has gone on to represent Australia
‘A’ at union after switching codes.
Finally, tributes have been paid to
Biarritz legend Pierre Mimiague following his death on Thursday
aged 73.
Mimiague
was scrum-half for the Basques between 1955-68 before going on to coach at
all levels with the club. His funeral will be held in Sainte Eugenie church,
Biarritz, on Tuesday.
