Former All Blacks
scrum-half Byron Kelleher was in Bayonne for a
medical on Thursday according to reports in the French
press.
Kelleher signed a
pre-contract deal with the Basque club some months ago but
it appeared that deal was falling through after the recent
presidential reshuffle.
Bayonne had reportedly
tried in vain to contact Kelleher all last week, and -
according to both Midi Olympique and L'Equipe
- the Basque club was somewhat surprised when the Stade
Toulousain player arrived on Thursday for talks and a
medical.
Kelleher has not played
for Toulouse since December due to a reported calf injury,
but he apparently underwent several tests at Bayonne on
Thursday afternoon. He also met new president Michel
Cacouault, as well as team manager Christian Gajan.
The 34-year-old former
international has been linked with a move to Stade Francais
in recent weeks, and it may just be that Thursday's
appearance in Bayonne was more of a courtesy call than
confirmation he would be joining Bayonne (as previously
announced).
According to
L'Equipe Kelleher underwent basic medical tests but did
not produce either his last blood test or an MRI showing his
calf injury, thus preventing Bayonne from conducting a
comprehensive "clinical examination".
"This interview was
necessary since we had never met. He was very courteous,"
said Bayonne manager Gajan.
Bayonne have already
signed Kelleher's Toulouse team-mate Cédric Heymans and are
reportedly in discussion with Frédéric Michalak, but the
French press still appears to believe that the scrum-half is
more likely to end up at Stade Francais than Bayonne next
season.

Current All Black
Joe Rokocoko, meanwhile, has confirmed that he will play
overseas - either in Europe or Japan - following the World
Cup.
New Zealand's most
capped winger has scored 46 tries in 68 Tests and is
reportedly a target for both Toulon and Stade Toulousain.
Rokocoko is
off-contract with NZRU after the competition and it seems
increasingly likely he will now join other All Blacks in
trying to secure a lucrative club deal.
"New Zealand has not
come through, there has been no talk so we have to look at
things," the star winger told the New Zealand Herald.
"I'll be looking to balance some good money with a good
lifestyle too. It's a matter of finding your comfort zone,"
he added.
That sounds right up
Toulon's street, although the bit about "finding your
comfort zone" might not be the exact words a prospective
employer would want to hear.
Elsewhere, Biarritz
have confirmed that ex-coach Patrice Lagisquet will
return to the club next season, although in which role
remains unclear.
Lagisquet coached the Basques between 1997 and 2008 and is
being tipped for a sporting director role, in conjunction
News of Lagisquet's
return to the Basque club came just a day after Jacques
Delmas was confirmed as Perpignan's head coach.
Delmas will succeed
Jacques Brunel, who is leaving at the end of the season to
take up his new role as Italy's head coach after the World
Cup.
Delmas, 53, had been
widely tipped for the job once it became clear that Biarritz
could not agree financial terms with the Ospreys to secure
the services of their Australian head coach Scott Johnson.
Perpignan president
Paul Goze has made it abundantly clear what Delmas must aim
for as the Catalans come to terms with a disappointing
2010/11 season. The 2009 French champions and 2011
runners-up have failed to even male the play-offs this time
around.
"The objective is
imperatively to finish in the top six of the championship,"
said Goze.
Perpignan will be
bolstered by the arrival of Wales fly-half James Hook next
season but he will not be joined by Ospreys colleague
Jonathan Thomas after the latter reportedly turned down a
big-money offer to sign for the Catalans.
The 28-year-old
back-rower has instead agreed a new deal with the Welsh
outfit, saying he still had "a burning desire to achieve
things with the Ospreys".
Perpignan winger
Julien Candelon, meanwhile, has been cited for a
dangerous tackle o lee Dickson during the club's Heineken
Cup semi-final defeat by Northampton. He will now appear
before an ERC disciplinary hearing in Ireland on May 11th.
Relegated Bourgoin,
meanwhile, are likely to lose the services of Olivier
Milloud, Yann Labrit and Gaetan Germain
next season, with the trio tipped to sign for Stade
Francais, Aix-en-Provence and Racing-Métro 92 respectively.
Finally, ProD2 outfit
Tarbes are hoping to confirm the capture of Scottish
international Craig Hamilton next week. The
31-year-old lock, capped five times, would be a straight
replacement for fellow Scot Colin Stewart. Hamilton will
reportedly arrive for medical tests next week.
Elsewhere in ProD2,
Mont-de-Marsan have confirmed two new signings, with
Czech winger Martin Jagr joining from Union
Bordeaux-Bègles and Fijian Dan Baleinadogo from
Aurillac.
