Top 14: Australia's Matt Giteau signs for Toulon; Wyn-Jones ponders French move

Australian international Matt Giteau has signed a two-year deal with Top 14 side Toulon.

The 28-year-old, who has been capped 91 times by the Wallabies, is set to join up with the wealthy French side at the end of the 2011 Rugby World Cup on an 18-month deal.

His capture is just the latest in a seemingly never-ending list of stellar arrivals at Toulon, following the recent capture of Gavin Henson, Sébastien Tillous-Borde and Alexis Palisson.

Giteau will join the likes of rugby superstars Jonny Wilkinson, Carl Hayman, Juan Sébastien Lobbe and Joe Van Niekerk at the hugely ambitious Cote d'Azur club.

The Canberra Times claimed Giteau had agreed a deal with Toulon until 2013, with the official announcement due later today (Wednesday), while the player himself confirmed the move on Twitter. "Signed for Toulon for 18 month deal after World Cup!", Giteau wrote. "Love the Brumbies and wanna make this yr as enjoyable as I can. Exciting times!", he added.

Giteau is due to captain ACT Brumbies on Saturday as they take on the Waikato Chiefs in the opening match of this season's Super Rugby. It will be his 90th Super Rugby appearance.

Giteau attended the same school in Canberra - St Edmund's College - as current Toulon scrum-half Matt Henjak and he can play at either fly-half or inside centre. He currently has 666 international points for Australia and comes from a sporting background as his father Ron Giteau was a rugby league player and his sister Kristy is a dual-code international for Australia.

Giteau's arrival is expected to be the first of several Australian signings in France, with Top 14 clubs keen to snap up the likes Rocky Elsom and his team-mates after the 2011 RWC.

The other current hunting ground appears to be Wales, and more specifically the Ospreys as Alun Wyn-Jones the club's latest international to confirm he is weighing up a summer move across the Channel.

James Hook and Lee Byrne have recently confirmed summer moves to Perpignan and Clermont Auvergne respectively, while former team-mate Henson has already signed up with Toulon in a surprise transfer less than two weeks ago.

Fellow Ospreys Mike Phillips and Shane Williams also continue to be linked with possible transfers, but it was Wyn-Jones himself who confirmed this week that he has been targetted by French clubs.

The highly-rated second row is out of contract at the end of this season and told Wales on Sunday that he remained undecided about his future.

"There has been interest from France, as there has been with other players," he confirmed. "In fairness to the Ospreys they approached me about a contract extension the week before the Magners League final last year, but that wasn't the best time to sit down and make decisions about the future. I put it off and I have been busy with the Ospreys captaincy and with Wales since then. I am in talks with the Ospreys but there has been interest from France," he added.

Clermont Auvergne and Stade Toulousain are both reported to be interested in signing the 25-year-old international.

Elsewhere, it is being reported in France that Castres Olympique are trying to woo Scottish international Max Evans, with a meeting between the two sides having apparently taken place after the recent France - Scotland match in the RBS Six Nations.

Meanwhile, Midi Olympique says Clermont's French international Benoit Baby has agreed a three-year deal to join Biarritz, who have also confirmed a contract extension for versatile back Marcelo Bosch.
