Top 14: Toulon strengthen wing options with Perez signing; Elissalde begins coaching

Big-spending Toulon have announced the signing of Samoan Paul Perez - their fourth new winger of the summer.

Perez, 24, has arrived as a 'medical joker' to cover for the still convalescing Christian Loamanu, and joins the club's burgeoning ranks of wide men.

Toulon had already signed Wasps and England winger Paul Sackey, Montpellier's highly rated Thierry Brana and former All Black Rudi Wulf (from Auckland Blues).

Perez was the top try scorer for New Zealand club Taranaki in 2008 before being deported after his work permit was revoked following a conviction for domestic assault against his pregnant partner in 2009.

Over at Stade Toulousain, meanwhile, former player Jean-Baptiste Elissalde is getting to grips with his new role as the club's backs coach.

Elissalde, who has followed his father Jean-Pierre in becoming a coach, said he was relishing his change in status despite retiring at the relatively young age of 32. "The only pressure that I have is to try and make sure that the guys are able to leave training a little less stupid than when they arrived," he told AFP.

The former international admitted that the hardest part of his new job could be the change in relationship between himself and players who were his on-field colleagues last season.

"I don't know how the guys are going to respond to my new role. I don't know how, from my part, I am going to react to my new position with regard to them. I suppose that all of that will work itself out as we go along," he added.

Elissalde is hoping to learn from vastly experienced head coach Guy Noves, as well as forwards coach Yannick Bru, as he takes his first steps on stage two of his professional career.

"I am going to focus on giving my very best. However, I realise that I am going to get some things wrong and we will just have to deal with that when the time comes," he said.

Top 14 newcomers SU Agen have been granted permission by the LNR to move two of their home games to the Stade Chaban-Delmas in Bordeaux. Club president Alain Tingaud said no final decision about switching the games had yet been made, but he soon hoped to confirm that the matches against European champions Stade Toulousain (December 29, 2010) and French champions Clermont Auvergne (March 25-27, 2011).

Should either or both of the matches be moved then Tingaud has assured supporters that season ticket-holders will be guaranteed a seat and transportation will be laid on by the club.

Perpignan number eight Yannick Parent, 23, has agreed a new two-year deal with the Catalan club. Parent, who only played four times last season, has also agreed to go out on loan to ProD2 newcomers Saint-Etienne for 2010/11 as he seeks to get more game time under his belt.

Montpellier have announced that Monday's training session will be open to the public. The July 12th session will take place at the club's training ground between 5-7pm, and players will be available for autographs at the end.

The Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR) has confirmed the dates and kick off times for the first two rounds of the new Top 14 season, with all matches due to take place in the evening to help players cope with the August heat.
