Racing-Métro 92
are the new leaders of Top 14 after they hammered
basement boys Bourgoin 51-20 to claim a
bonus-point victory.
The Parisians ran in
six tries, including five in a rampant second-half, as
they celebrated moving top in style. Their eventual rout
seemed some way off when Alberto Di Bernardo's second
penalty success made it 3-6 to the visitors after
quarter of an hour, especially with Fijian number eight
Jone Qovu in the sin-bin at the time. But Racing
fly-half Jonathan Wisniewski underlined why he is
currently the leading scorer in Top 14 - despite the
arrival at Racing of Juan Martin Hernandez - by slotting
three penalties for home side before touching down
himself for the game's opening try on 30 minutes.
That put Racing 14-6
ahead, but Bourgoin showed admirable resolve to reply
through Fijian winger
Nemani Nadolo
(shortly after re-entering following a yellow card) when
the 22-year-old ran in just eight minutes later for his
first try since arriving from the Waratahs in the
summer. Di Bernardo's conversion narrowed the gap to
just one point, but Wisniewski just had time to add his
fourth penalty success before the break.
After the resumption
it was pretty much one-way traffic from Pierre
Berbizier's ambitious side, with hooker Benjamin Noirot
crossing on 53 minutes to start a landslide of points.
Replacement flanker John Leo'o was next over (just eight
minutes after coming on), shortly followed by Sireli
Bobo (for his third of the season), Henry Chavancy and
Qovu.
Bourgoin did manage
a second try of their own in-between when Rudi Coetzee
forced his way over, but it wasn't enough to deny Racing
their attacking bonus which lifted them clear at the
head of Top 14.
Wisniewski finished with 21 points in the match, making
him the first player past the 100-point mark in Top 14
this season. He now has 104, including two tries.
Leading try and point-scorers in Top 14
Jonny Wilkinson also
passed the 100-point mark later on Saturday after
kicking 23 in Toulon's 28-16 'home' win against
Clermont Auvergne.
The England
international followed up last weekend's 21-point haul
with five penalties, two drop-goals and a conversion as
Toulon continued their recent upsurge in form.
The massive home
support at Marseille's Stade Vélodrome was temporarily
quietened when Clermont's Wesley Fofana touched down for
the French champions on 18 minutes, and Toulon were
still behind at the interval (9-13) despite nine points
from the boot of Wilkinson.
But Toulon No 10
then struck three times in the opening nine minutes of
the second half, with the Cote d'Azur side making hay
after Clermont's Benoit Baby had been yellow-carded for
a late tackle on Paul Sackey.
Morgan Parra did
manage a penalty in reply for Clermont - his third of
the afternoon - but Wilkinson's 40m drop-goal edged
Toulon five points clear before Joe van Niekerk's
decisive try just after the hour mark.
Jérôme Porical was
Perpignan's hero and saviour after he scored all
22 of their points to help them to a narrow and nervy
22-21 home win against Stade Francais.
The 24-year-old
converted his own second-half try and also kicked five
penalties as the Catalans fought back 12-21 down to
avoid the indignity of a second home defeat this season
at the Stade Aimé Giral.
Stade Francais gave
notice of their intentions when Julien Arias ran in for
the game's opening try after just nine minutes - while
home scrum-half Florian Cazenave was in the sin-bin -
and young winger Quentin
Valançon added a second before
the break as the Parisians threatened an upset.
Fly-half Lionel
Beauxis added two penalties and a conversion, while
Perpignan's response was limited to three penalties from
Porical as the hosts went in 12-18 down.
David Marty's
44th-minute yellow card for obstruction looked as if
would prove costly. but Stade only managed to add one
more penalty while the 2009 champions were a man down.
and they rallied spectacularly once back to full
strength.
Once more it was
Porical who provided the points, although this time
through a 56th-minute try which he converted himself.
Seven minutes later he completed the fight-back with his
fifth and final penalty, leaving Stade to ponder what
might have been as they returned home with just a bonus
point.
Elsewhere,
Biarritz continued their recent revival with a 23-29
away win at La Rochelle that finally ended a run
of nine successive away defeats in Top 14.
The Basques' latest
win followed previous home wins against Stade Francais
and Stade Toulousain, and saw them continue their climb
up the table after a stuttering start to the 2010/11
season.
Number eight Raphael Lakafia got them off
to an excellent start with his fifth-minute try,
converted by fly-half Julien Peyrelongue, but the
visitors were then forced onto the back foot as La
Rochelle found their rhythm.
Florian Ninard gave
them renewed belief with a 27th-minute try in response,
and five minutes later Seru Rabeni forced his way over
to level the scores at 13-13. Maxime Lebourhis'
conversion put the hosts in the lead for the first time
in the match, and his injury-time penalty saw them go in
18-13 up at the interval.
That was the signal
for Biarritz's influential scrum-half Dimitri Yachvili
to enter the fray, and the experienced international
duly kicked a penalty five minutes after coming on to
narrow the gap. Shortly after he produced a deft cross
kick to find American speedster Takudzwa Ngwenya in
acres of space to run in for try number two, with
Yachvili's conversion making it 18-23 to Biarritz.
La Rochelle's Romain
Carmignani was then yellow-carded - just two minutes
after coming on - with Biarritz adding six more points
during his absence due to a further brace of Yachvili
penalties.
But the home team
never gave up and duly got their reward for an honest
afternoon's work when Stéphane Clement crossed in the
second minute of time added on to earn them a deserved
defensive bonus at the death.
Over in Castres
it was Romain 'Robocop' Teulet to the fore once more as
the one-man scoring machine notched up 20 points in his
side's 28-6 home win against Brive. Teulet landed
six penalties and a last-minute conversion after France
winger Marc Andreu had touched down to put the gloss on
a workmanlike home win.
Fly-half Cameron
McIntyre got their other points with a first-half
drop-goal, while Brive were restricted to just two
Julien Caminati penalties in reply.
In Saturday's
evening match Montpellier continued their superb
start to the season as they thrashed SU Agen 6-35
to move second in the table.
Montpellier's win
was their fifth in seven games, and their second on the
road already this season, with France fly-half Francois
Trinh-Duc instrumental to another display of attacking
rugby from Fabien Galthié's side.
Captain Fulgence
Ouedraogo led the way with a brace of first-half tries,
while Trinh-Duc and Fijian winger
Timoci Nagusa also got
in on the act as the visitors ensured they claimed the
attacking bonus.
They
were 6-24 ahead by half-time, with Nagusa's try - their
fourth - even coming while Montpellier were temporarily
down to 14 men following Grant Rees' yellow card.
Argentine Martin Bustos Moyano chipped in with 12 kicked
points, while Trinh-Duc also added a second-half penalty
as 'Montpol' exposed Agen's tepid defence.
The
home team's only response was two first-half penalties
from Valentin Courrent, but two further misses from
relatively straightforward opportunities merely
underlined the gap in class between these two sides.
Montpellier's
impressive win lifted them above Stade Toulousain,
who beat pre-weekend leaders
Bayonne 29-20 on Friday night.
