Brive pulled
off the result of round six as they fought back from
27-12 down away to Stade Francais to snatch a
27-29 victory thanks to Ronnie Cooke's 78th-minute
converted try.
The defeat was the
Parisians' first at their new temporary home of Stade
Charléty, while Brive have now beaten Toulon and Stade
Francais on successive weekends after a tough opening to
their 2010/11 campaign.
The Limousin club
started brightly and were soon 0-6 up thanks to a pair
of Mathieu Belie penalties, before Stade responded with
two tries in eight minutes as they appeared to take
control. First over was England sevens international
Ollie Phillips - for his fourth try of the season -
before club captain Sergio Parisse followed suit - also
for his fourth of the season - in the 21st minute.
Fly-half Lionel Beauxis converted both and added a
subsequent penalty as well (before being yellow carded
in the 34th minute), but Belie replied with two more of
his own to keep Brive in touch 17-12 at the interval.
But when Stade
full-back Gurruchaga Rodriguez then showcased his
talents with a superb individual try, which he converted
himself on 43 minutes, the hosts appeared set for a
fourth successive home win as they eased 24-12 ahead.
Another Beauxis penalty extended that lead further to 15
points with just 27 minutes remaining, but Brive refused
to buckle and replied with a 61st-minute try from
Antoine Claassen, which belie duly converted.
Juan Manuel
Leguizamon and Fabrice Estebanez then both saw yellow
for a spot of handbags before a 50m penalty from Julien
Caminati brought the visitors within touching distance
just five minutes from time. Cooke's try three minutes
later then left the scores level, paving the way for
Belie to kick the winning conversion and seal a famous
win for Brive.
England cast off
Jonny Wilkinson showcased his all-round talents as he
ran in two tries and kicked four conversions and a
penalty as beleaguered Toulon finally found some
form to brush aside SU Agen 41-10.
The victory was
Toulon's first at home in three attempts this season and
also featured tries from lock Dewald Senekal, Argentine
Juan Fernandez Lobbe and former All Blacks winger Rudi
Wulf (his first for the club).
Toulon also claimed
a late penalty try to complete the rout, with Agen's
response coming via Florent Cazeaux's 47th-minute try
and five points from the boot of Conrad Barnard.
High-flying
Montpellier continued their excellent start to the
new season with a 23-12 home win against Castres
that featured tries from Mamuka Gorgodze and young
centre Geoffroy Dumayrou. Argentine Martin Bustos Moyano
chipped in with 10 points, while fly-half Francois
Trinh-Duc also kicked a penalty for the hosts.
And all this after
Castres full-back Romain Teulet had put the visitors 0-6
up after 11 minutes with two successful penalty kicks.
'Robocop' added another on 29 minutes, but subsequently
went off injured after the break after taking a hit in
the thigh.
Surprise leaders Bayonne
underlined their new-found confidence with an 18-16 home
win against French champions Clermont Auvergne on
Friday night.
The Basques have now
won five out of six games so far this season - including
their last three in succession - and appear to have
completely banished the nightmare of 2009/10, when they
only escaped relegation to ProD2 due to Montauban's
financial meltdown.
They
didn't have it all their own way against Clermont, with
the visitors opening up a 0-6 lead after 21 minutes
thanks to two Gavin Williams penalties, but they
gradually found their rhythm as the match progressed and
were 9-6 ahead by the interval after fly-half Benjamin
Boyet landed penalties in the 26th, 31st and 39th
minutes.
The
former Bourgoin player was at it again straight after
the resumption, this time succeeding with a close-range
drop-goal to further extend Bayonne's advantage.
Williams replied with his third success on 46 minutes
and Clermont then moved into the lead when Fijian winger
Napolioni Nalaga forced his way over from close range
for the only try of the match - and his third of the
season. Williams slotted the conversion to put Clermont
12-16 up, but Bayonne narrowed the gap just five minutes
later when scrum-half Cédric Garcia landed a 30m
drop-goal to move them within a single point.
The
comeback was then completed when Garcia's 50m penalty
bounced up and over the crossbar six minutes from time,
much to the delight of the ecstatic home crowd.
Leading try and point-scorers in Top 14
Racing-Métro 92 were also victorious as they
overcame a spirited La Rochelle side 43-18 - a
scoreline that was somewhat flattering to the hosts due
to three late tries, including a brace from
replacement lock Francois Van der Merwe.
Up until then Racing had
failed to pull clear, despite the visitors being
seriously handicapped by a 33rd-minute red card for
full-back Benjamin Dambielle. The 'Maritimers' No 15 had
already kicked two penalties by then as the visitors
battled for equity after Sireli Bobo's early try for the
hosts.
Italian international Mirco
Bergamasco added a second try for Racing shortly before
the interval, with Jonathan Wisniewski - on for the
injured Juan Martin Hernández - landing the conversion.
But La Rochelle got back
into the game via Seru Rabeni's 49th-minute try, and
when veteran winger Norman Ligairi also went over (in
the 67th minute) a potential upset was on the cards. At
24-18 down the away side had every chance of at least
claiming a defensive bonus before they eventually - and
understandably - ran out of steam.
Alvaro Galindo's
70th-minute try opened the floodgates, with der Merwe's
late double - his second after the final whistle) then
sealing a previously unlikely attacking bonus for Pierre
Berbizier's side.
Struggling Perpignan
also took their time to pull clear of bottom club
Bourgoin, eventually having to settle for a 27-20
home win that earned the visitors a valuable defensive
point.
Three Jérôme Porical put
the Catalans 9-3 ahead in the 38th minute, but the home
crowd was stunned into silence when 21-year-old centre
Alexander Dumoulin crossed for a try (converted by
Alberto Di Bernardo) on the stroke of half time.
The score remained an
unlikely 9-10 to Bourgoin until Farid Sid's 60th-minute
try for Perpignan, and it appeared to be game up for the
away team when Sid doubled up nine minutes from time to
leave the former champions 24-13 ahead.
But Bourgoin showed
admirably resilience with Bogdan Leonte touching down in
the 77th minute, paving the way for Di Bernardo's
conversion to seal the defensive bonus.
