Gavin Henson's Toulon
adventure is effectively at an end after the Wales
international was suspended for a week for a "breach of club
discipline".
The French press is reporting
that Henson fought with team-mates on Saturday night - in
the aftermath of their crucial league win against Stade
Toulousain - with club owner Mourad Boudjellal confirming
the ban on Monday morning.
"Gavin Henson is suspended
temporarily and we will make a decision about his future
next Monday," said Boudjellal in La Provence.
Henson has only played two
games since joining as a "medical joker" in the new year
until the end of this season. The former Ospreys player
publicly stated that he wanted to remain at Toulon beyond
that, but in light of this latest episode that is looking
increasingly unlikely.
News that the big-spending club
expects to complete the signing of Stade Francais and
France centre Mathieu Bastareaud by the end of the
week would appear to confirm that Henson was unlikely to be
offered a new deal anyway.
The arrival of Bastareaud - yet
to be confirmed - would be yet another transfer coup for
Toulon, following on from an ever-lengthening list of
internationals due to join the Cote d'Azur club next season.

Matt Giteau, Bakkies Botha,
Sébastien Tillous-Borde and Alexis Palisson are already
signed up, with Bastareaud now likely to become the latest
star to join their stellar squad. Stade Francais would be
happy to let Bastareaud go as it would ease their current
financial problems, and they are trying to get Toulon's
Argentine international Felipe Contepomi in part exchange.
Contepomi's appearances at
Toulon have been limited due to Jonny Wilkinson's presence,
and Stade are actively on the look-out for a new fly-half as
Lionel Beauxis has already signed to join Stade Toulousain
next season.
According to L'Equipe the
Bastareaud deal, which has been a work in progress for
months, could be finalized by the end of this week. The
player himself hinted at his departure recently, saying he
had already made his decision and that all parties involved
knew of his choice.
Toulon's capture of London Irish
flanker Steffon Armitage, meanwhile,
appears to have time to run yet. Toulon announced his
capture last week, saying the five-times capped England
player had agreed a two-year deal.
That was subsequently thrown
into question by the Exiles' head coach Toby Booth, who said
news of a finalized deal was somewhat premature.
"Steffon Armitage is in the
middle of a three-year contract," harrumphed Booth. "There's
no contract signed anywhere else, no compromise agreement,
no anything," he added.
Booth said he would "bitterly
disappointed" if Armitage left, but admitted the club was
already in talks with former Bath back rower Michael Lipman
- now playing Super 15 rugby with Melbourne Rebels.
But, and there's always a
'but', Booth went on to admit that if Armitage really did
want to leave - as seems quite apparent - then the club
would not stand in his way as long as they can find a
replacement of "suitable standard".
Lipman would appear to fulfill
that criteria, while perhaps a sweetener payment from Toulon
might helped ease Irish's pain.
"If his [Armitage's] ambitions
have changed and he wants to look at other opportunities
then we will discuss that. I want world class players at
this club so whether I want to keep him or not sometimes is
taken out of my hands," said Booth.
