England fly-half Jonny
Wilkinson is due to get his second outing for new club
Toulon tonight (Thursday) when they take on AC Brumbies in
their final pre-season friendly.
Wilkinson
played 40 minutes of Toulon’s opening
match – against Brive – but missed Friday’s 33-19
win over Racing Metro 92 to allow him to rest.

Pre-season friendlies
Wilkinson, 30, looked
impressive against Brive, slotting two out of two penalties
and hurling himself into tackles with his customary zeal as
he made his playing comeback after 10 months out following a
dislocated knee.
Wilkinson’s half-back
partner is set to be fellow new signing Pierre Mignoni,
while former Saracens favourite Kris Chesney continues in
the second row, partnered by Esteban Lozada. Tom Sourice,
Olivier Missoup and Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe make up the
back row, while South African Ross Skeate is on the bench
after overcoming a “niggling rib injury”. Scotland’s Rory
Lamont looks set to start at full-back, with former Cardiff
centre Jamie Robinson battling it out with Sonny Bill
Williams for the No 13 shirt.
The Brumbies will be
hoping to build on their impressive 17-0 win against
Perpignan as they complete their four-match French tour.
They lost their opening two matches to Bourgoin and Bayonne.
Bayonne were
victorious again on Wednesday as they saw off Ireland’s
Ulster 17-10 in front a 10,000 strong crowd. The Basques
ran in two tries as they opened up a 14-3 half-time lead,
with scoring restricted after the break following a
torrential downpour.
Montpellier
continued their own pre-season build up with a 24-19 victory
against English champions Leicester Tigers on
Wednesday evening.
Montpellier’s Ollie
Smith scored a try against his former club – one of two for
the French side as they battled back from 19-18 down at
half-time. Winger Jacques Boussuge claimed their other try,
while full-back Olivier Sarramea kicked four penalties and a
conversion.
Leicester’s first-half
scores came from Matt Smith, Jack Cobden and Lewis Moody,
with Bill Twelvetrees kicking two of his three conversion
attempts.
Three players received
yellow cards, with Leicester’s Craig Newby and Robbie Harris
following Jerome Vallee into the sin-bin.
Tigers head coach
Richard Cockerill told the Leicester Mercury: “I am
pleased with the attitude of the players. Obviously we would
like to win but it’s not about that at this stage.
“There were lots of
really nice things. We scored three good tries. I am really
happy with the young guys and pretty much everybody in the
squad got some game time.”
Leicester play their
second match in France on Saturday when they take on Castres
at Camares.
Leicester included French triallist Nicolas Jeanjean, with
the full-back also set to feature against Castres as
Cockerill runs the rule over the former international.
Wednesday’s victory
over Leicester, meanwhile, follows Montpellier’s hard-fought
12-5 win against Sale Sharks in their opening match of the
Challenge Armand Vaquerin on Sunday.
Clermont coach
Vern Cotter will have Thomas Domingo, Jamie Cudmore, Gonzalo
Canale and Seremaia Bai at his disposal for the Saturday’s
friendly against Glasgow Warriors at Issoire. All four
missed Les Jaunards’ opening game, a 40-28 defeat at
Biarritz. Scrum-half Morgan Parra has been passed fit to
play but Benoit Baby will be absent due to an injury
sustained against ‘Les Biarrots’.
Brive’s England
and British Lion international Riki Flutey has
returned from New Zealand to begin pre-season training.
Flutey was given additional time off following the Lions’
tour of South Africa.
Stade Francais, who have largely opted
for training ahead of friendlies, are spending the week
doing “mountain activities” in the Alps. Hiking and mountain
trekking have been on the agenda so far, with players
continuing the bonding and fitness exercises ahead of
Friday’s match against Bourgoin – their second and last
before their season opener against Toulon on August 14.
