Joy: Bourgoin fans celebrate

Bourgoin 17 (6) Perpignan 6 (3)
Cash-strapped Bourgoin
pulled off one of the results of the season as they downed
champions and leaders Perpignan at the Stade des Alpes.
The financially crippled
club pulled off a remarkable but thoroughly deserved 17-6
victory as they followed up on previous home wins against
Biarritz and Racing-Métro 92.
The Catalans started
brightly enough, and went ahead when fly-half Gavin Hume
slotted a 30m drop-goal on 12 minutes to gain reward for
their positive opening.
But Bourgoin gradually
fought their way back into contention, with their forwards
exerting increasing pressure at both set pieces and in the
loose.

A stray
high tackle presented Benjamin Boyet with the chance to
level up after 19 minutes, and the Bourgoin fly-half was
also on hand six minutes later when Perpignan's scrum
collapsed and conceded another penalty
Gregory
Le Corvec's yellow card soon after - for taking out Florian
Denos in the air - put Perpignan under further pressure, but
Jérôme Porical missed with two late penalty kicks in the
first half as the defending champions struggled to find any
rhythm.
Bourgoin
emerged charged up after the interval and their intent paid
almost immediate dividends when hooker Rémy Vigneux
intercepted a Jean-Philippe Grandclaude pass on 40 meters
and set in motion a try-scoring counter attack. Vigneux
himself beat two defenders before being pulled down on the
22, but not before off-loading for scrum-half Jon Senio to
complete his maiden try for the club since signing from
Clermont Auvergne.
Boyet's
conversion attempt rebounded off a post, but Bourgoin's 11-3
lead was enough to wake up the slumbering Catalans as thy
realised defeat loomed large. Porical's 49th-minute penalty
reduced the arrears to 11-6, but just when the stage
appeared set for a fightback the champions' were battered
again by Boyet.
A missed 45m attempt in the 52nd minute could
have proved costly, but the fly-half made up for his error
in emphatic style as he was on target again in the 57th and
61st minutes to complete the scoring and seal the victory.
He also became Top 14's leading points scorer this season in
the process, with 58.
The most
serious threat to the result was a three-minute stoppage
shortly after Boyet's last penalty when the floodlights
temporarily failed. But it proved only temporary respite for
the champions as their three-match winning streak was
abruptly halted by yet another spirited home performance by
Bourgoin.
The win
will be another massive fillip in a difficult season, which
has already seen them hauled back from the brink of
bankruptcy and collapse. They'll also have the added bonus
of an increased gate taking after moving the match to FC
Grenoble's Stade des Alpes and attracting a crowd of 15,000.
It was a
bold move to make, especially as Bourgoin had lost on all
five previous occasions that they had relocated 'home'
games.
