Early leaders Aurillac slipped from their perch at
the weekend after losing 35-16 away to Racing Metro,
paving the way for Grenoble to move
top following their excellent 16-25 away win at
Beziers.
Fly-half Danie de Beer enjoyed a mixed match for the
new leaders, scoring a try, conversion and penalty
before being stretchered off with a knee injury late
in the first-half. But his efforts were enough to
set up Grenoble's hard-won victory at the Stade de
la Mediterranee, with replacement Pierre Alexandre
Dut adding 15 points of his own after coming on,
courtesy of four penalties and a drop goal.
Thomas Pochelu kept the home side interested with a
hat-trick of penalties, while Vincent Jaca scored a
last-minute try to further reduce arrears.
The win lifted Grenoble - the division's top scorers
with 97 points after four games - into top spot,
just one point ahead of four teams now tied on 13:
Racing Metro '92; La Rochelle, Aurillac and SC Albi.
Fijian wing Sireli Bobo grabbed two tries and South
African Greg Goosen contributed 20 points (a try,
three conversions and three penalties) as
Racing Metro beat surprise early leaders
Aurillac 35-16 at home. Tongan lock
Ikapote Fono scored for the visitors to restrict the
half-time deficit to 18-11, but the Paris side
powered away after the break with South African back
row Ashley Clarke rounding off the scoring with his
side's fourth try shortly before the final whistle.
Third-placed La Rochelle kept up
the pressure with a last-ditch 22-23 away win at
Union Bordeaux-Begles. The visitors
were 3-10 up at the break thanks to winger Florian
Ninard's 13th-minute try but Bordeaux rallied after
the interval and looked set for victory, thanks
mainly to 17 points from Duvallet's boot, before
scrum-half Benjamin Ferrou scored with two minutes
remaining. Remy Tales then kicked the all important
conversion to break Bordeaux's hearts.
Kevin Boulogne kicked 23 points as SCA Albi
beat RC Narbonne 28-22 at
the Stade Municipal to maintain their impressive
start. Full-back Benjamin Lapeyre also got on the
scoresheet with a 46th-minute try after Kiwi
Karnecius Kaufana had opened the scoring for
Narbonne with his fifth-minute try.
Tarbes were outscored two tries to
one but still managed their first win of their
season as Apanui kicked 29 points in their 34-24
home win against SU Agen.
First-half tries by Yoann Huget and Romain
Edmond-Samuel gave Agen hope of a precious away win,
but Apanui kicked eight penalties, a drop goal and
converted Christophe Andre's 50th-minte try to seal
the victory.
Local rivals Pau were also indebted
to their kicker, with South African Andre Hough
scoring all of their points in a 30-23 home win over
Colomiers, who managed a try in
each half thanks to efforts from Eric san Vincente
and Majeste.
Lyon OU dropped to sixth spot after
falling 22-15 away to Oyonnax.
Full-back Pierre Yves Montagnat was the home side's
hero, scoring 19 of his team's 22 points through
a try, conversion and four penalties. South African
Jeandre Fourie kicked five penalties to claim all of
Lyon's points, but it wasn't enough.
Bottom club Bourg-en-Gesse are
still looking for their first win after going down
24-6 at FC Auch Gers, for whom
Roman Rongerias and Alexandre Ricaud both scored.
