Justin Marshall and Byron Kelleher both cited

Former New Zealand scrum-halves Justin Marshall and Byron Kelleher have both been cited after the weekend’s Heineken Cup and European Challenge Cup matches.

The ex-All Blacks, who now ply their trade for Montpellier and Toulouse respectively, have been summonsed to appear in Ireland on Thursday to answer their charges.

Marshall has been cited for an alleged high tackle on Bristol’s Tom Ascott, while Kelleher is accused of stamping in Toulouse’s narrow home win against Bath.

The European Rugby Cup (ERC) disciplinary commission confirmed Kelleher had been cited for deliberately stamping on Bath’s Butch James.

Sale duo Rudy Kiel and Kris Ormsby must also put in an appearance after they were both cited as well following their away victory in Clermont.

Marshall is hoping to avoid suspension so he can take his place at No 9 against Northampton at Franklin Gardens on Saturday.

“We have ambitions at this club to be one of the best teams in France, and exposure to the likes of Bristol and Northampton is a key part of that development,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s too soon for us to be competitive in Europe and we showed last week against Bristol that we are capable of winning our home games.”

Montpellier beat Bristol 33-15 but will face a much sterner test against Northampton, who demolished Toulon 56-3 at the Stade Felix Mayol.

Marshall admitted Montpellier would remain true to their running style. “It suits us and the way that we play, and we used our usual game plan against Bristol and that, hopefully, will continue top work as well against the big packs of the English teams as it does against the likes of Toulouse,” he added.

Marshall admitted the Northampton match would be “a huge game for us” but said he was confident that Montpellier could cause problems.

“It’s going to be tough but also a great opportunity for us to go in as the underdogs and try and get something out of the match,” he said.
